How often should one go in for a message?
Swedish, deep tissue, hot stone–the question remains. Well, it depends on what you are trying to achieve.
Massage is one of the most powerful tools out there for preventing injury, recovering from an injury or pain, or improving your athletic performance.
Massage For Preventative Maintenance
If you are looking for preventative maintenance, having a massage every 3 to 4 weeks will keep the body running smoothly. If you aren’t experiencing any pain or injury issues, you can increase that time frame.
Massage For Pain or Injury
If you are recovering from an injury or experiencing pain, massage will help speed up your recovery and reduce your downtime. If you have a major injury such as a tear or joint damage, having a massage every day is recommended to reduce inflammation and scar tissue build-up and promote healing.
Massage for Athletes
If you are an athlete, massage will improve your performance and reduce your risk of injury by increasing circulation and oxygenation to muscles, reducing inflammation build-up in the body that can lead to injuries that occur during movement.
Massage for Strength & Conditioning Athletes
If you are training for strength or power sports such as football, weight training, etc., having a massage twice a week will help prevent injuries during training, but also prepare your body for competition.
Improving Sleep & Stress Reduction with Message
If you are looking to reduce stress and improve sleep quality, massage is one of the most effective ways to do this. Massage reduces cortisol levels in the body that have been linked to high blood pressure, prevents muscle tension caused by stress which can cause insomnia or sleep disturbance and releases endorphins that can also help you sleep more deeply.
First Time Massage Clients: Do This
For first time clients having a massage every week will improve circulation and reduce stress and anxiety levels on the body, allowing your therapist to assess what areas of the body need work on which we commonly see as an area for physical tension e.g back or neck pain.
Experienced Clients
For experienced clients who are looking to improve their health, relaxation or athletic performance having a massage every 2-3 weeks will be recommended. This is because if muscles and soft tissue become too used to the work they will not receive as much benefit from future sessions. If you have had ongoing pain such as neck and shoulder tension, lower back pain or injury, this will be recommended every 1-2 weeks to keep the body healthy.
Some clients also find that they get the most benefit out of their massage when it is done on a regular basis which could be anywhere from 2-5 days apart. This allows you to stay flexible depending on your work schedule without needing an extended period of time between treatments.
